At #5 is... Lady Gaga's performance of "Paparazzi" from 2009. Most people knew about Gaga back in '09 but she was still breaking into the mainstream. All it took was her piano playing, lacy costume, and disturbing dancing during this performance that had everyone talking about who we now call Mother Monster. This is bittersweet for us, since Gaga isn't nominated for any VMAs this year and will not be at the show.
Moving on to #4 on our list is rapper Eminem with "The Real Slim Shady" mashed with "The Way I Am" performaed at the 2000 VMAS. You likely remember this performance with its massive Eminem clone entrance as he sang "The Real Slim Shady," no doubt the anthem of the year 2000. Eminem definitely set his icon status with this performance.
At #3 on our Best VMA Performance of all-time list, is the infamous Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera performance from 2003. The three gals sang Madonna's hit "Like A Virgin" and song titled "Hollywood" complete with their now famous lip locking. Britney and Christina both showed up on stage dressed as brides doing a cover of Madonna's famous "Like A Virgin" performance from 1984 complete with the rolling around on the floor when Madge finally shows up as the groom. After the groom kisses one Bride, she kisses the other.
Getting down to #2 on our list is Michael Jackson's medley of songs from the 1995 VMAs. He mashed up many of his hits including "The Way You Make Me Feel" along with "Billy Jean" and more. In possibly the longest VMA performance ever (over 15 minutes) MJ reminded us why he is the King of Pop. Although we think it's lip synched, his iconic dance moves and cameo from Slash make up for it.
Last at #1 our Best Video Music Award performance of ALL TIME is...Madonna's "Like A Virgin" performance from 1984. This was the moment that had everyone talking, for years. It was Madonna's envelope pushing performance as a bride of "Like A Virgin" that made her a household name. She sashayed across the stage and bumped and grinded to her own tune.
