Ariel Winter's Father Asks Judge Not to Grant Shanelle Gray Permanent Guardianship

Written By King on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 | 5:00 AM

Ariel Winter's dad, Glenn Workman, objects to Shanelle Gray's request to seek permanent guardianship of the "Modern Family" actress. Contrary to his older daughter's claim, he insists that he's quite capable of caring for the teen star. He says he has a decent job and doesn't need Ariel's money to support him.

"I am physically, emotionally, and financially capable of caring for my daughter, without limitation. No evidence has been produced that suggests any detriment to Ariel associated with my father-daughter relationship with her," Glenn says. "I am a frugal and modest person with a moderate income who doesn't need Ariel's income to survive."

Acknowledging that Ariel's relationship with her mother Chrisoula Workman is strained, Glenn claims he has a great relationship with Ariel. "We enjoy going on long walks together ... and I love to listen to her talk to me ... I find her to be very interesting," he states as quoted by TMZ. He doesn't mention anything about the abuse claim against his wife though.

He's concerned that the 14-year-old actress, who's estranged from her mother due to her relationship with 18-year-old boyfriend, actor Cameron Palatas, may be trying to grow up too fast. He, however, believes "Ariel has demonstrated a lot of maturity and is at an age now that she should have more control over her finances."

"This whole situation has turned into a circus and places Ariel in a position she should not have to be in," he continues addressing the family chaos that has gone to public, blaming Shanelle for distancing Ariel from her parents. "I ask this court to allow me the chance to function as a healthy parent and help Ariel through this ordeal."

"I want to provide for her a calm loving home environment that is a retreat from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood; a place where she can think and relax without any distractions," he adds.

While Glenn only expresses his worry that Shanelle may not be able to properly take care of Ariel and that the guardianship will further strain the parents-daughter relationship, his wife Chris blatantly accused the older daughter of using Ariel as a stepping stone for her own career as an actress.

Meanwhile, a source tells RadarOnline that "social workers from the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) conducted extensive interviews with Ariel, her mother and her sister. At the conclusion of those exhaustive interviews and based on other evidence that social workers had, they have written a formal report for the judge handling the guardianship petition, and DCFS officials agree that her sister should remain as Ariel's guardian."
