Taylor Swift left the 46th Annual Country Music Awards winless on Thursday night, going 0-for-3 in a bleak end to an otherwise phenomenal week for the young singer. Swift was nominated for Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Musical Event of the Year, but lost those categories to Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert and Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, respectively. All this despite the fact that her newly released album, Red, sold over 1.2 million copies to top the Billboard charts.
Now, the other day someone posted a comment saying that I’m apparently sexist for lobbing a legitimate criticism at Taylor’s song writing, i.e. the fact that she always writes about breakups. As if women have never looked at Taylor’s music and thought, “You know, maybe she should write about something new for once.” Let me make one thing clear: I’m not sure if you noticed this, but we make fun of ALL mainstream artists, not just Taylor. Look at all the times we read Justin Bieber or those weird little One Direction fetuses. It’s not a matter of sex, it’s a matter of me legitimately not liking certain aspects of their song writing. It is never sexist to question whether someone is living up to their full potential.
